WEIGHT LOSS, are you serious!

Are you unhappy or frustrated with the way that you look and feel, ready to make a healthy change?  If you aren’t committed to making that change, there is no point in reading on.

I remember reading a research paper about 3 years ago on the type of person that the common consumer (you) would visit if they wanted to lose weight.  I was surprised and stunned to see that fitness trainers and nutritionists were not even in the TOP TEN on this list. After reading the list and seeing who was on it, I realised that most individuals are relatively uninformed and have skewed views on how to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

The top on the list:

1.      Doctors - If I had a health issue, a doctor is the first port of call but they are not really the first choice unless they have certifications in either fitness or nutrition.
2.      Women’s magazine – How unrealistic! (eg: Women’s day, Women’s weekly, etc.) The so-called “Stars” are typically pampered and catered to through every step of the weight-loss process. The photos are also retouched to appear better than they really are.(No actual proof)
3.      Friends and Relatives – Not an option because what real expertise do they have?
4.      Work colleagues- as above

LOW on the list:

13. Personal Trainer – trained and experienced for weight loss
14. Nutritionist – trained and experienced for weight loss

We are a society that wants instant results but are not prepared to actually do any work for it. The reality is that we need to take some responsibility for our own actions.

Some of the lack of action and results can be blamed on the fitness and nutrition industry. When the client loses motivation and finds it difficult to continue, it is up to the professionals whom are taking their money to make them accountable for their actions and to find ways to encourage them again. Memberships don’t make you lose weight and they don’t ring you if you don’t show up for your workout session. Not everyone will be able to lose weight and stay healthy the same way, so a different approach is required for most individuals.

The health and fitness industry has traditionally been owned and operated by health driven individuals who “walk the talk” but now, with it becoming a 3 trillion dollar business it is consequently attracting business minded owners from outside the fitness industry. The difficulty with this is that the new style of some fitness companies, treat the client as a commodity rather than a person with real needs and goals. All businesses should make money but not at the detriment of the client? How can there be personalised service when you have over 1,000 members and less than 10 staff? A friend of mine and a well respected person in the fitness industry commented that M1NT have a product that most people want or need and because we endeavour to provide an outstanding service we have a point of difference in this industry. She also explained that small, boutique and a “need to belong” are becoming more popular as individuals find personalised attention more essential than one size fits all.

So back to my original question...what works well for weight loss? The real answer is anything and for most people, changing something will ensure results if they do it consistently but it is absolutely essential to get the right information if you require faster results and want to keep it that way. You must seek help from a professional that is qualified in that particular field.

M1NT is only as successful as its clients’ results. Our success is your success, we will encourage and challenge you but the first step has to be yours.

If you want to experience a boutique fitness centre where you have one professional to every 20 members, read our advertisement on this page!
